Emma Rodriguez-Ayala is the general counsel and a managing director of Mesirow Advanced Strategies, Inc. (“Mesirow”), a registered investment adviser focused on building multi-manager hedge fund portfolios and managing approximately $11.6 billion for institutional investors worldwide.  As the general counsel, she is responsible for legal and compliance affairs, including providing legal advice with respect to all aspects of its business, directing relationships with external counsel and maintaining its operations in compliance with relevant legal and regulatory requirements.  Emma is a member of Mesirow’s Operating Committee, which oversees and coordinates business decisions for the firm, including operational risk management, and serves as a director for several of Mesirow's investment funds for institutional investors.

Emma has served on the faculty of the Practising Law Institute since 2015, and regularly speaks at hedge fund industry events. A sample of recent speaking engagements include: AIMA Global Policy and Regulatory Forum, “Navigating Regulatory Complexity”; HFM Operational Leaders Summit, “Tracking the Changing Face of the Industry and the Role of the Ops Professional”; UBS COO/CFO Conference, “Trends in Fund Governance and Investor Scrutiny”; HFM Fund of Hedge Fund Leaders Summit, “Information Overload: How to Cope with an Increased Reporting Burden”.  In addition, consistent with Mesirow’s commitment to its clients and the hedge fund industry generally, Emma actively engages in regulatory advocacy for the fund of hedge funds industry, including presenting to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission staff on risk management practices by commodity pool operators and working with other market participants to advocate with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the National Futures Association, and the European Securities Markets Authority.  In September 2015, Emma was profiled in the Hispanic Executive Magazine as a national Hispanic leader.

Prior to joining Mesirow in 2012, Emma was a founder and managing member of a boutique law firm providing legal services to investment management firms and was previously an associate in the investment funds, advisers and derivatives group at Sidley Austin LLP. She served as external legal counsel to Mesirow since her time at Sidley Austin LLP.

Emma received a B.S.B.A. summa cum laude from Saint Louis University and a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School.
