Staff Attorney
New York, NY, USA

Elyssa Caplan is a Skadden Fellow and Staff Attorney at The Door’s Legal Services Center. The Door is a comprehensive youth development agency located in lower Manhattan. Each year The Door serves more than 11,000 young people from all over New York City with a wide range of services including reproductive health care, mental health counseling, legal assistance, GED and ESOL classes, tutoring, college preparation services, career development, job training and placement, supportive housing, sports and recreational activities, arts, and nutritious meals. The Legal Services Center provides a range of civil legal services, and has a focus on representing undocumented young people in both affirmative and defensive immigration proceedings.

Elyssa specializes in representing youth in foster care who are undocumented. Her fellowship project aims to reach particularly vulnerable immigrant clients, including those who suffer from mental illness, those who identify as LGBTQ, and those who are pregnant or parenting teens. She practices in Family Court in all five boroughs, representing clients as they seek the special findings orders necessary for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status applications to USCIS. Elyssa graduated magna cum laude from The University of Pennsylvania in 2007. She received her Masters of Science in early childhood education from Pace University in 2009, and went on to receive her joint Masters in Social Work and JD from New York University in 2013.
