Eileen Hershenov joined the Wikimedia Foundation as General Counsel and Secretary in May 2017. The Foundation operates the online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, which is visited more than 15 billion times a month, as well as other Wikimedia projects.  Eileen oversees the work of the Foundation's legal and public policy departments. 

Prior to moving out to the Bay Area, Eileen worked as Of Counsel for a boutique media law firm in New York City. From 2005 - 2015 she served as the Vice President and General Counsel to Consumer Reports, the largest consumer advocacy, testing and publishing organization in the U.S. Before that she was General Counsel for the Open Society Foundations (Soros Foundations), where she supported affiliates in over 30 countries.

Eileen began her legal career as a law clerk to Jack B. Weinstein in the Eastern District of New York and then joined the ACLU as a Karpatkin Fellow, where she litigated national security, immigration, and other civil rights and liberties cases.  From the ACLU she spent several years as a litigation associate at Morrison & Foerster’s New York office.

Eileen graduated from Yale College and Yale Law School.  She worked as a community activist between college and law school, running a successful legislative campaign to change the statute of limitations governing toxic tort cases in New York State.
