Edward K. Runyan is a partner in the Firm's Chicago office, where he is a member of the Intellectual Property Practice Group. He handles a broad range of matters related to intellectual property law, including infringement litigation in US Federal Courts and the ITC, as well as patent prosecution in the US Patent and Trademark Office. In addition to providing general counseling on patents and technology, Mr. Runyan advises on the intellectual property aspects of mergers and acquisitions such as IP due diligence and portfolio evaluation. In addition to his extensive legal experience, Mr. Runyan served as Master Systems engineer at Sundstrand Aerospace (now Hamilton Sundstrand) in Rockford, IL where he was responsible for the design, development and support of electrical power generating systems for commercial and military aircraft.

Practice Focus

Mr. Runyan assists clients in building strategic patents that protect the client’s technology and helps them achieve their business objectives. This process includes the preparation and prosecution of US and foreign Patent Applications, with particular attention given to drafting claims that will withstand validity attacks during litigation. Mr. Runyan also has significant experience in dealing with semiconductor and telecommunications technologies involving wireless and wired communications, and is well-versed in optical communications technology, imaging technology, aircraft navigation and control, and microelectromechanical systems. His track record also includes advising Fortune 500 companies in the IP aspects of mergers and acquisitions.
