Dr. Karasick is responsible for IBM’s World Wide Cognitive Computing Research agenda.  In this role he is responsible for a broad set of technologies, many done in close collaboration with IBM Watson. These technologies include creation optimization of, and creation of new AI technologies, methodologies and tools that support the Cognitive Application lifecycle, new reasoning and learning algorithms, language/speech/image processing, content enrichment, cognitive systems and new acceleration technologies.

Previously, Dr. Karasick oversaw the productization of Watson, responsible for the evolution of Watson from a single application to a unique platform of technical capabilities, along with development of patterns, methodologies and tools for the creation of Watson Applications.

In both his Research and Watson roles, Dr. Karasick has created a unique combination of Researchers and Engineers committed to developing cognitive technologies and products that are transformational for IBM and for our customers.

Dr. Karasick has spent his entire IBM career on the creation and productization of novel technologies, with leadership roles across IBM’s Research and Software organizations: Lab Director in Beijing (collaboration software development) and in San Jose CA (IBM Almaden Research Center); strategy/delivery responsibility for the IBM Research Software Portfolio; IBM’s Business/Technical strategist for IBM’s Software business; Director of Development for mobile and desktop platforms and technologies; IBM CTO for mobile computing; and Director of Development of mobile and sensor/actuator solutions.

Dr. Karasick began his IBM career in 1988 as a researcher with diverse research roles: hardware design; systems and High Performance Computing; programming environments; mobile user experience; speech; pen computing; geometric modeling and robotics; and leader of a multi-company semiconductor fabrication logistics project at Sematech.

Karasick has published numerous papers in the areas of software engineering, geometric modeling, programming languages and compilers and pervasive computing. He is also a prolific inventor, being recognized as an IBM Master Inventor. He received an Honors B.S. from the University of Manitoba, MS from McGill University, and PhD from McGill and Cornell Universities, all in Computer Science.
