David H. Tomlin

David Tomlin has more than 30 years’ experience as an AP reporter, bureau chief and executive. Before being named associate general counsel in 2003, he served as a general executive in AP's membership department and later as assistant to the president. From 1991 to 1995 he was director of Technology Marketing, overseeing worldwide sales of the AP NC 2000 digital camera and other editorial systems and software. Tomlin joined AP in Columbus in 1970. He left in 1972 to work for the San Antonio (Texas) Express-News, rejoining AP in 1976 in Raleigh, where he was named news editor in 1978. Later that year, he moved to Pittsburgh as correspondent. From 1980 to 1984 he served as chief of bureau in Columbia, S.C., and was chief of bureau in Des Moines from 1984 to 1988. In 1988, Tomlin moved to AP headquarters in New York, serving in a variety of executive assignments before taking on the technology marketing project. A graduate of the Johns Hopkins University, Tomlin holds a master's degree from the Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies and a law degree from New York Law School. He and his wife, Pam, live in Manhattan.
