David Gottesman is Acting Co-Chief Litigation Counsel and Deputy Chief Litigation counsel in the SEC’s Division of Enforcement.  In that role, David oversees the approximately 50-lawyer Trial Unit of the SEC’s Washington, D.C. headquarters, and provides guidance and leadership to the trial attorneys in the SEC’s eleven regional offices located throughout the nation.

David joined the SEC in 2004 as an Assistant Chief Litigation Counsel, later became Supervisory Assistant Chief Litigation Counsel, and was appointed as the Deputy Chief Litigation Counsel in 2014.

At the SEC, David has tried to jury verdict several high profile cases involving accounting and financial fraud, including cases against senior executives of a number of large publicly held companies.  David also has litigated cases involving insider trading, market manipulation, investment company and adviser fraud, offering fraud, pump-and-dump schemes, Ponzi schemes, and registration violations.

Before joining the SEC, David was a trial attorney with the Department of Justice, Civil Division, where he handled a wide range of commercial litigation matters.  David previously was a partner at a Chicago law firm, where he handled a variety of securities and commercial cases.

David received his B.A. and J.D. cum laude from the University of Minnesota.
