David Ballantine

David Ballantine is a deputy chief counsel in ESPN’s legal department and is based in the company’s New York offices. Ballantine focuses on ESPN International’s worldwide business, as well as selected U.S. matters. He assumed this position in February 2012.

Ballantine joined ESPN’s London office in 2006 as European regional counsel, where he was the lead attorney for ESPN’s business in Europe, Middle East and Africa. He was instrumental in numerous acquisitions such as ESPNCricinfo.com, ESPNScrum.com, Racing-live.com, ESPN America (formerly North American Sports Network), and ESPN’s rights acquisition of Premier League matches, a large step for ESPN’s business in the U.K. market and launching ESPN’s first live UK network.

Ballantine’s legal team in the company’s Latin American, Europe, Middle East and Africa and Asia Pacific regional offices provide legal support in areas including rights and programming acquisitions, distribution, product licensing, new media, litigation, and regulatory compliance.

Prior to joining ESPN, Ballantine was executive director of legal and business affairs EMEA for The Walt Disney Company. Prior to that, he worked at Richard Li’s Pacific Century Cyberworks launching Network of the World and at Hammer Films after its acquisition by Charles Saatchi.

Ballantine is a U.K. qualified solicitor and received his undergraduate degree in economics from Southampton University.
