Chris Klem has been a partner of Ropes & Gray since 1985.  He focuses his practice on the representation of major institutional investors, including endowments, investment managers, sovereign wealth vehicles, personal wealth vehicles, hedge funds and private equity funds. He also represents broker-dealers, insurance companies and other financial intermediaries. His work includes oversight of mergers and acquisition transactions for financial service clients; daily, time-sensitive advice on securities trading and reporting matters; and extensive involvement in client regulatory matters. With respect to universities, his work includes advice on governance, endowment utilization and a broad range of financial issues. Chris is currently co-head of the firm's Universities and Colleges Practice Group and previously headed the firm's Securities and Public Companies Practice Group for many years.

Chris organizes comprehensive outside legal services for many of his clients. Several of these client relationships have been active for more than thirty years. They frequently involve a sensitive coordination of work among general counsels and their staffs, senior management, governing boards and varied resources and expertise within Ropes & Gray. 

Chris has had extensive experience as a director of venture-stage corporations, conservation organizations and educational institutions. He is currently a Director of the Massachusetts Audubon Society and a member of the Wellesley College Investment Committee. He has previously served as an Advisor to the Chewonki Foundation, an Overseer of the DeCordova Museum, a Trustee of the St. Mark's School, and Vice President and a Trustee of the Fenn School. He is also a former Commissioner of the Lincoln Conservation Commission and member of several local and regional land use commissions. Chris is active in arranging environmentally focused pro bono legal projects at Ropes & Gray.  He has also served as a director of several client-related entities involved in investment and biomedical endeavors. He is a past Chair of the Committee on Insurance Regulation of the ABA Section on Administrative Law and Practice.

Chris is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School.
