Brent A. Hawkins focuses his practice on intellectual property litigation, counseling and procurement.

He has served as lead counsel in numerous patent, trademark, trade dress, unfair competition and copyright matters, representing clients in jurisdictions throughout the country. Brent’s practice has embraced a wide range of technologies, including:

  • Computer networking, consumer electronics and software: Ethernet switches, ETSI standards, hard disk drives, multi-band antenna, Power-over-Ethernet (PoE - IEEE 802.3af/at), LTE, touchscreens, two-way radio devices, video compression and transmission software and Wi-Fi standards-compliant devices (IEEE 802.11)
  • Mechanical devices: consumer housewares, current-control regulators for lighting systems, diesel engine technology, paper-converting technologies, photo processing technology and sensor technology, optical elements
  • Pharmaceutical products: topical pharmaceuticals including Dovonex®, Taclonex® and Solaraze®

In addition, Brent utilizes his degree in engineering to prosecute patent applications in the mechanical, electro-mechanical and software arts. He has served as lead counsel in ex parte and inter partes proceedings in both the US Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) and Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB).

Brent has performed due diligence investigations, provided counseling and rendered opinions in connection with the sale or acquisition of businesses or targeted business assets involving various technologies. Brent also has counseled clients in connection with licensing negotiations, including regarding alleged standard-essential patent (SEP) and related RAND/FRAND issues.

Brent also serves as co-chair of McDermott's Racial & Ethnic Diversity Sub-Committee.
