Belkys Garcia has been a staff attorney with The Legal Aid Society since 2007 helping low-income New Yorkers access various government benefits. She is currently in the Civil Practice Law Reform Unit focusing on health and benefits after spending five years in the Health Law Unit where she represented clients and engaged in policy and legislative reform on issues regarding access to health care. She served as a principal attorney on Cruz v. Zucker, a challenge to a Medicaid regulation which denied payment for medically necessary health care for transgender Medicaid recipients. Previously in The Legal Aid Society’s Bronx Neighborhood Office she represented clients on appeals of denials of public assistance, food stamps and disability benefits in administrative hearings, New York State Courts and U.S. District Court. Belkys is a graduate of CUNY School of Law and The New School.
