Amy L. Bomse is a partner in the attorney liability and business litigation groups of Arnold & Porter LLP and is based in the San Francisco office.  Ms. Bomse focuses her practice  on representing lawyers and law firms in litigation.  She has defended lawyers in malpractice and breach of fiduciary duty claims as well as motions to disqualify.  She represents attorneys in responding to state bar inquiries.  She is frequently called upon to provide advice to law firms on compliance with legal ethics including conflicts of interest.  She lectures frequently on legal ethics issues and has published articles on the legal developments impacting the practice of law.

In addition to her practice representing lawyers, Ms. Bomse has represented a wide range of clients in the financial, insurance, agriculture and software industries in disputes at the trial and appellate level including shareholder derivative lawsuits, breach of fiduciary duty and bad faith claims.

In 2009, Ms. Bomse served as an Assistant District Attorney for the City and County of San Francisco. As an ADA, Ms. Bomse handled five jury trials. Ms. Bomse also maintains an active pro bono practice with a particular focus on campaign finance reform and civil rights.  She was a member of the team that represented the City of San Francisco in the landmark gay marriage case. 

While at Duke University School of Law, she was the Executive Editor of Duke Law Journal and a member of the Moot Court Board.

Representative Matters

  • Defended law firm in malpractice action resulting in summary judgment for law firm and award of attorneys fees.
  • Successfully defended a law firm against disqualification motion based upon attorney's initial consultation with adverse party.
  • Successfully defended law firm against objection to appointment of firm as counsel for official committee of unsecured creditors.  In re Plant Insulation Co., 414 B.R. 646 (2009)
  • Successfully reversed a $300 million punitive damage award against Genentech. City of Hope v. Genentech, Inc., 43 Cal. 4th 375 (2008)
  • Successful appeal to the Sixth District Court of Appeal of an unfair settlement.  Terry v. Conlan, 131 Cal. App. 4th 1445 (2005).
  • Successful immigration appeal to the Ninth Circuit of on behalf of political refugee from Kenya.
