Overview

When it comes time to perform legal research, you must do so efficiently and effectively to save time, energy, and even money. Building upon skills that researchers utilize, learn how to further develop your legal research skills by focusing your topic, formulating your query using sophisticated Boolean operators and applying organization systems to your research. Using PLI PLUS – a legal research database of secondary sources - this training teaches the key skills necessary for professionals, attorneys, legal researchers, paralegals and research analysts to get started with legal research. These skills can be applied to and are transferable to any legal research database and will help you find answers in a larger data set.

 

What You Will Take Away

  • A Review of legal research and tax related secondary sources, which contains current and up-to-date analyses of today’s legal issues and procedures
  • How to Identify the keywords and terms to focus your tax topic and use in your search queries
  • How to effectively conduct tax research using Boolean operators/terms and connectors:
    • Find terms within the same sentence, paragraph, or number of terms
    • Use truncation or root expander to search for variant endings of a root word
    • Perform nested searches, a way to combine several search statements into one comprehensive query
    • Execute proximity searches which finds word combinations regardless of the order they appear
  • Organization techniques to apply to your research findings for easy retrieval with focus on:
    • Utilizing filters when you have a large result set of legal documents
    • Searching within your results to narrow down your search results to those legal documents that are most relevant to you
    • Saving your searches to run again at a later time and track your research progress
    • Applying notes and highlights to content to help keep track of all your notations in your research
    • Keeping track of found content using bookshelves so you can view the documents you previously added to a shelf
