Overview

On November 1, 2018, the revised California Rules of Professional Conduct go into effect.  The California Supreme Court has approved comprehensive changes to the rules, including increasing the rules from 46 to 69, and adopting the ABA Model Rules numbering and organization system.  Practitioners will get a crash course on the major substantive changes to help avoid claims of ethical misconduct. 

Some specific amendments and modifications that will be addressed include:

  • Prohibitions against harassment and discrimination towards clients and in the workplace
  • Broader conflict of interest rules
  • Safekeeping of funds and fee arrangements
  • Sexual relations with clients
  • Duty to supervise subordinates
