Overview

Net neutrality is once again back in the news, with the Federal Communications Commission proposing to reverse the classification of broadband internet access service as a common carrier service and to roll back many of the Open Internet rules that were upheld last year by the D.C. Circuit.  More than 10 million comments have been filed so far on the Commission’s proposals, and Internet Service Providers, content providers, and other internet and communications companies are assessing the potential outcomes from this proceeding – including further litigation. Businesses and regulators in other countries continue to monitor these developments.

Please join Hogan Lovells US LLP partners Michele C. Farquhar (a former FCC Wireless Telecommunications Bureau Chief) and Alexander (Alexi) Maltas from Washington, D.C.  to discuss the proceeding and its implications for the internet ecosystem.  They will discuss:

  • The FCC’s proposals in its notice of proposed rulemaking
  • The positions of key constituencies, including the media’s influence on public perceptions
  • Potential outcomes of the proceeding
  • The legal implications of reclassifying broadband internet access service, and the legal grounds for any new rules
  • The possibility of Congressional action and the impact of pending commissioner nominations that are before the Senate
