Overview

While regressive and discriminatory criminal justice fees have been described and critiqued in the adult system, the issue has received relatively little attention in the juvenile system. Nevertheless, the imposition of monetary sanctions is a regular feature of juvenile courts across the country. Such fees significantly undermine the juvenile system’s rehabilitative goals. Attorneys are uniquely situated to help clients and their families negotiate local fee schemes, and to push for policy reform in this frequently overlooked area.
