Overview

Why You Should Attend

This program is designed for attorneys and social workers in private, pro bono, or public interest practice interested in assisting domestic violence survivors "on the other side of the law." These include survivors facing criminal charges directly related to abuse they suffered, survivors charged with failing to protect their children from exposure to domestic violence, and survivors serving prison sentences for crimes that emerged from domestic violence.  By focusing on skills and strategies for attorneys and social workers advocating for survivors both in criminal and family law cases in court and in parole and clemency proceedings before executive branch bodies, this program will benefit both new and experienced practitioners, and will enhance their ability to address domestic violence issues and represent their clients.

What You Will Learn

  • Victim as respondent in abuse and neglect and order of protection proceedings
  • Victim as criminal defendant
  • Victim in parole and clemency proceedings
