Overview

Medicaid, a health program jointly funded by states and the federal government that serves millions of low-income individuals, is a critical component of the nation’s coverage landscape. Traditionally Medicaid has provided health coverage for the elderly, disabled, pregnant women and children with low income. Although it has been a politically charged issue, through the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the majority of states have chosen to expand Medicaid to low-income adults using different strategies. This Briefing will provide an overview of the key elements and implications of Medicaid expansion and the potential policy changes that could occur in the changing health care landscape.

Please join Maureen Hensley-Quinn, Senior Program Director at the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP), as she:

  • Reviews the policy changes brought about by the ACA
  • Discusses the strategies states are using to expand Medicaid coverage to newly eligible adult populations
  • Considers what may be ahead for the Medicaid program as a result of potential Congressional activity aimed at repealing, replacing or repairing the ACA
