Overview

It is not uncommon for legal issues to affect the health of patients.  As more providers turn to holistic care, more providers are looking for solutions to resolve the legal issues that affect the well-being of their patients.  Thus, many providers are exploring a medical-legal partnership (“MLP”).

A successful MLP requires two professionals, each with well-established processes and procedures, to collaborate in the interest of their mutual patients/clients.  Additionally, a hospital-based MLP requires the collaboration of two complex and quite different institutions:  the hospital (and its management and providers) and a legal service organization (with its own management and providers).  Frequently, neither understands the other and getting the two onto the same page to serve the same population can be challenging.  This free one-hour briefing will address the steps two partners took in order to make it happen, including:

  • Engaging the hospital;
  • Engaging the legal service provider; and
  • Enlisting community collaborators.

Please join Sheniece J. Smith, Assistant General Counsel, CHOC Children’s Hospital, Orange County, California and Leslie Bigler Lindgren, Director OCMLP, Inc. and Partner at Lindgren, Lindgren Oehm & You as they describe their two-year path to establishing a successful MLP.  This presentation will be of particular interest to hospital counsel and legal service lawyers engaged, or about to engage, in MLP.
