We are pleased to introduce The Current: The Journal of PLI Press, a new quarterly journal geared to providing coverage and commentary on new and developing issues in a broad range of practice areas. In each issue of The Current, we’ll be bringing you ten to twelve original articles written by leading attorneys and offering a range of expertise and perspectives on critical issues facing practicing lawyers and the legal profession.

This premier issue of The Current, being published barely six months into the new presidential administration, includes a number of articles that examine the possible impact of new proposals and initiatives on particular areas of law—from immigration (the possible changes to H-1B visa practice), to taxes (consequences of the possible elimination of the estate tax, and the implications for the nonprofit sector if the “Johnson Amendment” is eliminated), to FDA regulation of off-label promotion for medical drug and device manufacturers, and ERISA enforcement.

The other articles in this issue deal with equally timely topics that will appeal to practitioners who are interested in communications in the digital age (the impact of “deindexing” online search results on protection of online speech); intellectual property (predictions regarding the Federal Circuit’s upcoming decision in Wi-Fi One, as well as why the USPTO’s pilot program of auditing declarations of use may not have much impact on the U.S. trademark Register); securities (how companies may need to rethink integration and communications in an age of tweets and posts); civil rights (the rapidly evolving recognition by agencies and courts of gender identity and sexual orientation discrimination); and more.

As the pace of change in the law – and indeed in the practice of law itself – continues to accelerate, so does the need for more current expert commentary and analysis. The Current intends to fill this need, providing practicing attorneys, academics, and members of the judiciary with insightful commentary and analysis of those changes.
