Transitions
Anita Carr Shapiro
Late in 2014, the Board of Trustees announced that after a nationwide search Anita Carr Shapiro was selected to be the Practising Law Institute’s fifth President effective as of PLI’s Annual Meeting in April 2015.
Ms. Shapiro had served PLI for more than 14 years both as a Program Attorney from 1999-2004 and as Director and Executive Vice President of the Program Division since 2006. Among her many accomplishments, she had major responsibility for PLI’s corporate relocation to 1177 Avenue of the Americas in 2013 as well as the design of PLI’s state-of-the-art conference center. Ms. Shapiro also had a major role in the acquisition of the assets of The SEC Institute (SECI) in early 2014 and was responsible for a successful inaugural year for SECI.
Ms. Shapiro obtained her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania, her Juris Doctor degree from Temple University School of Law and was recently awarded a Certificate in Business Excellence (CIBE) from Columbia Business School.
Victor J. Rubino
The Board of Trustees at the same time announced the selection of Victor J. Rubino to become the Practising Law Institute’s first President Emeritus in recognition of his more than 30 years of service as President.
Mr. Rubino started at PLI in 1979 as Associate Director and was named Executive Director in 1983, which changed to President in 2006. There were a number of changes during Mr. Rubino’s tenure at PLI including many significant developments that are noted in this report.
Mr. Rubino graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and Cornell Law School with a Juris Doctor. After two years of service in the Army, he served as the Managing Attorney for the New Rochelle branch of Westchester Legal Services for two years and then as Program Officer and Treasurer for the Council on Legal Education for Professional Responsibility, a private foundation funding law school clinical programs.
