The formalities for filing and prosecuting an inter partes reexamination proceeding are explained from the perspective of both the requester and the patent owner.  Topics include: substantial new question of patentability; timelines for taking certain actions; strategy for an effective amendment/response to the first office action; responding to the ACP and RAN; and use of Rule 181, 182 and 183 petitions to allow for continued prosecution.  Illustrations from a few actual cases will be given to illustrate the points and to provide a resource for those who face similar problems.
