Overview

Why you should attend

Learn about laws, courts and practices that protect or are designed for veterans.  The three hour program will inform and update general practitioners and the criminal bar about each.

What you will learn

Recent changes to Penal Code 1170.9 allow the court to provide treatment in lieu of incarceration for veterans who suffer from PTSD, TBI, sexual trauma, substance abuse, or mental health problems as a result of having served in the United States military.

Several counties in California have established Veterans Courts, but each is different and had a different genesis, and the variety of those courts will be explained and explored.

Learn about state and federal laws that protect employment and property rights of veterans and active military service members.  Some new veterans are returning to find that those rights were not respected, and attorneys have won substantial victories on their behalf.

Who should attend

Criminal defense lawyers, prosecutors and judges who see defendants whose criminal activity might be related to trauma from their military service should attend the two hours on Veterans Courts and the changes to Penal Code 1170.9.

Attorneys practicing consumer, employment or family law, whose clients include veterans, should attend the one hour session on laws and practices that protect veterans.
