As law firms grapple with ways to build client loyalty and ensure seamless client service, grow essential practice areas and the expertise necessary to support them, and implement their strategic growth plans, succession planning is a critical tool to ensure success.   

However, many law firms have not looked critically at succession planning or how it might link to the overall strategic plan.  Partners who may be moving quickly toward retirement may not have a viable “heir-apparent” within the firm.
