Overview

On June 5, 2013, reporters working with documents provided by Edward Snowden revealed that the NSA had been collecting Americans’ phone records in bulk and storing them for later searching. Days later, the American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit challenging the program, and on May 7, 2015, the Second Circuit held that the program is unlawful.  This One-Hour Briefing will discuss the Second Circuit’s recent ruling, the other pending civil and criminal cases challenging NSA surveillance, and the shifting legislative landscape on NSA reform.

Please join two of the ACLU lawyers who litigated the Second Circuit challenge, Alexander Abdo and Patrick Toomey, for a discussion of the NSA in the courts and in Congress. They will discuss:

  • Pre-Snowden NSA-surveillance litigation
  • The NSA’s phone-records program
  • Other NSA-surveillance litigation in both civil and criminal cases
  • The legislative fight over NSA surveillance
