Overview

Why You Should Attend
Approximately 20 percent of Americans experience some type of mental illness in a given year,  and the  prevalence of mental disorders among individuals involved in the criminal justice system, and some areas of the civil legal system is even higher. 

This timely program will focus on the intersection of individuals living with mental illness and their involvement in both the criminal and civil justice systems in New York State.

What You Will Learn

  • Recent developments in the Risk-Need-Responsivity Model: Modalities for determining a litigant’s potential risk of re-offending and the role that mental health issues play
  • Using risk assessment in prosecutorial decisions and defense strategies involving defendants with mental illnesses
  • New York’s Civil and Criminal Justice Systems’ response to litigants with mental illness
  • Ethical issues raised by risk assessment and risk management

This program is designed for New York State Judges, Court Attorneys, law clerks, prosecutors, defense attorneys, private Bar, state attorneys, and mental health system professionals involved in the New York State justice system.
