Overview

All students should have the opportunity to learn.  However, exclusionary discipline and school-based law enforcement often push students out of school and into the juvenile justice system—a phenomenon known as the “school-to-prison pipeline.”  Normal childhood behavior, that once resulted in a trip to the principal’s office, now can result in suspension, expulsion and arrest.  Students of color, students with disabilities and LGBTQ students are often most impacted by disproportionate discipline and arrest for behaviors such as “disrupting class,” using profanity, and truancy.  Attorneys can play a vital role in disrupting the school-to-prison pipeline and ensuring that all students have the educational opportunities they deserve.

Please join Hannah Benton Eidsath, Senior Attorney at the National Center for Youth Law, to learn more about:

  • Litigation strategies to reduce disproportionate school discipline, address inappropriate police-student interactions, and improve the education of youth in juvenile justice facilities;
  • Recent policy reforms to prevent students’ exclusion from school;
  • Promising interventions that tackle the root causes of the school-to-prison pipeline; and
  • Resources available to attorneys representing students at risk of exclusionary discipline and school-based arrests.
