R. David Wheat is a senior partner in the Dallas office of Thompson & Knight LLP. His practice focuses on corporate tax, mergers and acquisition tax, transactions involving partnerships and LLCs, and tax controversies. He provides clients with transactional planning and advice, document preparation, and preparation of tax opinions on federal and state tax implications of business transactions, including corporate mergers and acquisitions and the formation and operation of partnerships and limited liability companies.
Mr. Wheat is a former Chair of the ABA Corporate Tax Committee. He is also a former Chair of the Dallas Bar Tax Section and the State Bar of Texas Tax Section. Mr. Wheat has been voted by his peers as one of the Best Lawyers in Dallas in his field and a Top 100 "Texas Super Lawyer" in Texas Monthly, and has been selected one of the Best Lawyers in America.
Mr. Wheat has been recognized by the prestigious Chambers USA legal directory, and according to clients quoted in the directory he is "a top M&A tax expert who has a good grasp of the big picture while focusing on the details." He also has experience in administrative and judicial litigation in federal and state tax matters.
Mr. Wheat received his B.S. (with honors) from Louisiana State University in 1985, his J.D. (Order of the Coif; Chancellor's List; Louisiana Law Review) from Louisiana State University Paul M. Herbert Law Center in 1988, and his LL.M. in Taxation from New York University School of Law in 1989, where he was Graduate Editor of the Tax Law Review and a Wallace Scholar.
