Peter Hsiao is a partner in the global technology and finance law firm of Morrison & Foerster LLP. He is the head of the Land Use and Environmental Law Group in Los Angeles and the firm's Green Chemistry Group. Drawing upon his science background as a chemical engineer, Mr. Hsiao has more than 25 years of experience in environmental law and clean technology, both in the United States and internationally.
Mr. Hsiao is appointed to the American Bar Association's Standing Committee on Environmental Law. He was named as a Distinguished Environmental Advocate by the ABA Section of Environment, Energy and Resources. He is the former Chair of the Environmental Law Section of the State Bar of California. Mr. Hsiao is identified by Best Lawyers in America as a leading lawyer in environmental law. The Legal 500 and PLC Global 3000 recommend him as one of the best environmental lawyers in the United States. He was cited by Super Lawyers as a leading environmental attorney in California. Mr. Hsiao formerly served as a senior environmental lawyer at the Justice Department during his appointment as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California. Mr. Hsiao was lead counsel representing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy in major environmental cases including cases involving biosolid and energy facilities. He received the U.S. Department of Justice's Special Commendation Award, the U.S. Attorney's Office Special Achievement Award, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Golden Eagle Award.
In private practice, Mr. Hsiao advises Fortune 500 clients on a wide variety of environmental, natural resources and toxic tort matters, with a specialty in clean technology regulations both internationally and at the national and state level. He is the co-editor and co-author of the California Environmental and Natural Resources Law Handbook, a comprehensive treatise in its 12th Edition. He is asked to speak on a wide variety of clean technology and environmental law issues, and has served as a lecturer for the American Law Institute and the American Bar Association on clean air regulations and litigation.
Mr. Hsiao is a magna cum laude graduate in chemical engineering from the University of Utah, where he received the Outstanding Student Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He obtained his Juris Doctor in 1985 from the Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California at Berkeley, where he received the McBaine Advocacy Award.
