Michael Hirschfeld is a tax partner in the firm's New York office, specializing in international, corporate, work out, and partnership matters.
Mr. Hirschfeld is the Chair-Elect of the Section of Taxation of the American Bar Association. He has recently authored comment papers to the IRS prepared by the Tax Section on the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, which has a major impact on financial institutions investing in the US. He is also Vice President of the American Tax Policy Institute and the Vice Chair of the Special Investors Group of the American Bar Association Section of Real Property. Michael is former Chair of the Tax Section's Committees on Government Submissions, Real Estate Tax Problems, and Chair of the 9/11 Task Force and Hurricane Katrina Task Force. Michael is also the former Council Director for the Tax Section's Committees on Foreign Activities of US Taxpayers and US Activities of Foreign Taxpayers. He is also a former member of the Executive Committee of the New York State Bar Association's Tax Section, and among other positions, chaired their Committees on Real Property, Accounting and United States Activities of Foreign Taxpayers. Michael is a member of the American College of Tax Counsel, the Committee on Taxation of Business Entities of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York's Tax Section and the Tax Review.
Mr. Hirschfeld is a nationally recognized tax expert listed in Who's Who In America, The International Who's Who of Corporate Tax Lawyers, The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers, and The Best Lawyers in America. He is a frequent lecturer on tax planning, the impact of recent legislation and other tax matters before virtually every major tax seminar in the United States. He has written over fifty articles for The Journal of Taxation, The Journal of International Taxation, Taxes Magazine, Tax Times, Taxation for Accountants, The Real Estate Tax Digest, The Canadian Tax Journal and various other publications. He is also on the Tax Management Real Estate Advisory Board, the Journal of International Taxation Advisory Board and the Editorial Board for Business Entities, an RIA publication. He is a co author of the book entitled "Real Estate Limited Partnerships," which is published by John Wiley & Sons.
Mr. Hirschfeld attended the City College of New York, where he was awarded a BEE Degree summa cum laude in 1972, University of Pennsylvania, where he was awarded a JD Degree cum laude in 1975 and was an editor of the Law Review, and New York University, where he was awarded an LLM Degree in Taxation in 1980.
