Maura O’Connor is a partner in the Real Estate Practice Group in the Los Angeles office of Seyfarth Shaw LLP. Her practice focuses on real estate financing, acquisitions, development and leasing. She has extensive experience in complex financing transactions, purchases and sales of environmentally contaminated properties, and sophisticated real estate loan workouts and foreclosures. She has successfully led the acquisition, entitlement, and development of major industrial, manufacturing, infrastructure, warehouse and distribution facilities. She has served as lead counsel for myriad senior and mezzanine loans, lease financings, securitized transactions, ground leases and equity investments for a wide variety of investors, banks, insurance companies and others.
Ms. O’Connor also has particular experience in handling foreign direct investment transactions by new entrants into the US and California markets. She has designed large-scale systematized retail rollout programs, most recently acquiring more than 150 store site leases in 18 months for a multinational retailer entering the US market. Her clients have included retailers, manufacturers, pharmacies, grocery chains, lenders, borrowers, hotel chains, shopping center owners, pharmaceutical companies, medical office complexes and ports.
Ms. O’Connor frequently speaks on a variety of legal topics to business and legal groups. She has been highlighted as one of the top ten real estate lawyers in Southern California in 2005 by Real Estate Southern California, which also named her a “Woman of Influence” in 2006 and 2007. She has also been named one of the Distinguished Alumni of the University of Minnesota Law School.
Ms. O'Connor is the author of the law blog, Practical Counsel, which offers her insights and commentary on legal matters related to commercial real estate. Practical Counsel is a joint publishing initiative with GlobeSt.com. She is Vice-Chairman of the Board of the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC), in which she also serves as a Member of the Executive Committee and as Co-Chair of the LAEDC Land Use Strategic Advisory Committee. She also is a Director of the City of Hope Los Angeles Real Estate/Construction Council, and a member of the Advisory Board of the Southern California Development Forum. Maura is a member of the American Bar Association, the American Counsel Association, the Southern California Development Forum, and the International Council of Shopping Centers.
She earned her J.D. cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School, and her B.A. from Carleton College (1981), and is admitted to the California Bar and the U.S. Supreme Court Bar.
