Mary Alejandro has been serving as Acting Regional Solicitor in the San Francisco Office of the Solicitor, U.S. Department of Labor, since January 2012, and as Deputy Regional Solicitor since December 2006.
The San Francisco office and its Seattle and Los Angeles branch offices are responsible for legal services, primarily civil trial litigation, under the statutes enforced by the U.S. Department of Labor, in U.S. District and Bankruptcy Courts and in various administrative tribunals in eight States-Arizona, California, Hawaii, Alaska, Nevada, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington-as well as the U.S. Island Areas of Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. The majority of cases arise under the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, the Mine Safety and Health Act, various contract labor statutes, and the Immigration and Nationality Act.
In 2005, Ms. Alejandro came from Department of Labor headquarters in Washington, DC, to serve as counsel for Wage and Hour in the San Francisco office. During the course of her career, Ms. Alejandro has held several other position in the Department of Labor, including trial attorney in both the national and regional offices and regulatory counsel for the Mine Safety and Health Administration, as well as special assistant to the Assistant Secretary for Mine Safety and Health.
Ms. Alejandro holds a BA from Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA and a JD from the College of Law, University of Illinois, Champaign, IL.
