Julie Bauer is an experienced trial lawyer and a partner in the firm's litigation department. She has tried cases before state, federal and bankruptcy courts and administrative agencies.

Ms. Bauer's significant trials include:

A/tria Croup Inc. v. United States (S.D. N.Y. 2009): She represented plaintiff Altria Group Inc. in a jury trial seeking a refund of corporate income taxes. Altria argued it was entitled to certain deductions related to leveraged lease transactions of its subsidiary Philip Morris Capital Corporation.

United States v. Ryan (N.D. Ill. 2006): Ms. Bauer was a member of the team that defended former Illinois Gov. George H. Ryan in his six-month jury trial on public corruption charges, including racketeering, mail fraud, and income tax fraud.

Price v. Philip Morris USA Inc. (Madison County, Ill. 2003): Ms. Bauer represented Philip Morris USA in a consumer class action concerning the sa le of " light" cigarettes that was tried to verd ict in Madison County, Ill.

Auditorium Theatre Council v. Roosevelt University (Circuit Court of Cook County, Ill. 1998): Ms. Bauer represented the Auditorium Theatre Counci l in a dispute with Roosevelt University over the operation and control of the Adler and Sullivan-designed Auditorium Theatre and in particular, whether the university created a public trust of the theatre.

In addition, Ms. Bauer has handled a wide variety of complex commercial and class action litigation. She represented Caremark International Inc. in In re Caremark International Inc. Derivative Litigation, 698 A.2d 959 (Del Ch. Ct. 1996), which culminated in a significant decision on the scope of the duty of care owed by directors and officers to a company; lsquith v. Caremark International Inc., 136 F.3d 531 (7th Cir. 1998), in which the Seventh Circuit held that a stockholder who received shares in a spinoff cou ld not state a claim under Section 1 O(b) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934; andln re Caremark International Securities Litigation, No. 94 C 4751 (N.D. Ill.), a group of consolidated securities class action lawsuits brought by open market purchasers.

Ms. Bauer also represents publishers, authors, and broadcasters in defamation, invasion of privacy, and right of publicity matters. She has spoken to the media on avoiding legallandmines and counsels them prior to publication on minimizing legal risks.

Ms. Bauer joined the firm in 1987 following a two-year clerkship with the Hon. Charles P. Kocoras of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of
Illinois.
