JUSTICE BARBARA JAFFE is an Acting Justice of the New York State Supreme Court. She received her Juris Doctor degree from Brooklyn Law School, a Masters degree from Syracuse University, and an A.B., with honors, from Syracuse University. Presently, she presides in an individual assignment part and is specially assigned to try cases involving asbestos and toxic torts. Previously, she handled pre-trial litigation in cases brought by and against the City of New York and was specially assigned to conduct trials of matrimonial matters.
Justice Jaffe is a member of the New York City Bar Association, presently serving on its Special Committee on Capital Punishment. She has represented the City Bar as a Delegate to the New York State Bar Association's House of Delegates, and has served on its Committee on Nominations, Committee on Art Law, Committee on Civil Court, Committee on Criminal Law, and Special Committee on Public Service and Education. Through her membership with New York County Lawyers' Association, she is a Founding Faculty Member of its Art Litigation and Dispute Resolution Institute, and co-chaired the Civil Court Practice Section. She now sits on its Supreme Court Committee and Pro Bono Committee. She also chaired a joint committee composed of members of the City Bar and NYCLA which produced, in several languages, the "New York State Criminal Justice Handbook."
Justice Jaffe's membership with the New York State Bar Association includes the Executive Committee of the Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law Section and the Judicial Section. She also belongs to the National Association of Women Judges, Jewish Lawyers Guild, JALBCA (Judges and Lawyers' Breast Cancer Alert), and the Columbian Lawyers' Association. At the New York Women's Bar she co-chairs the Professional Ethics and Discipline Committee and has served on its Board of Directors. She also co-chaired the Legislative Committee and the Criminal Law Committee of the Women's Bar Association of the State of New York, and is a Past President of the Association of Arbitrators of the Small Claims Court.
